Dog Pregnancy Stages: The Three Trimesters
Sixty-three days divide neatly into three trimesters of about three weeks each — the same framing the gestation calculator uses. Here is what develops in each stage, which vet checks belong to it, and what you will see at home.

Trimester 1 (days 1–21): the invisible stage
Fertilization, the embryos' journey to the uterus, implantation, and the placenta forming. Organs only begin. At home: essentially nothing to see — perhaps a few off-food days near the end as implantation completes. No test can confirm anything yet; even the earliest (relaxin) only starts working at this trimester's border. Care: normal food, normal exercise, no new medications without flagging a possible pregnancy.
Trimester 2 (days 22–42): the confirmation stage
Eyes, spinal cord, then toes, claws and whisker buds — by the end of this trimester the fetuses are recognizably puppies. This is the vet stage: relaxin test (day 21–28), ultrasound heartbeats (from day 25), palpation (days 28–35). At home her nipples pink up, any nausea passes, appetite returns, and by day 42 her belly is starting to round. Care: switch gradually to puppy food from week 5, agree the deworming plan with your vet.
Trimester 3 (days 43–63): the rapid-growth stage
Skeletons calcify (X-ray count from day 45), coats and markings form, mammary glands develop, and the puppies gain most of their weight. At home: an obvious belly, puppy movement you can feel, nesting, and finally the temperature drop that announces labor. Care: set up the whelping box by day 50–55, start twice-daily temperatures at day 56, and be on watch from day 58. The week-level detail is in the week-by-week guide.

The three trimesters at a glance
| Trimester | Days | Key milestones | Vet checks | What you may see |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trimester 1 | 1–21 | Fertilization; embryos travel to the uterus; implantation; the placenta forms; relaxin begins to rise | None needed yet — book the confirmation visit for the end of this stage or the start of the next | Almost nothing; a few off-food, “morning sickness” days are possible around week 3 |
| Trimester 2 | 22–42 | Eyes and spinal cord form; toes, claws and whisker buds appear; skeletons begin to calcify toward day 42–45 | Relaxin blood test (about day 21–28) · ultrasound from about day 25 · palpation about days 28–35 | Belly starts to round toward the end of the stage; nipples larger and pinker; appetite returns and climbs |
| Trimester 3 | 43–63 | Rapid growth — the puppies gain most of their weight; skeletons fully calcified; puppies nearly full size by week 8 | X-ray from about day 45 for a reliable puppy count | An obvious belly and puppies seen or felt moving; nesting and possibly milk in the final days; a temperature drop below 99 °F signals labor within about 12–24 hours |

Frequently asked questions
How long is each trimester in a dog pregnancy?
About three weeks each: trimester 1 is days 1–21, trimester 2 days 22–42, and trimester 3 days 43–63. The whole pregnancy is only about 63 days, so each trimester passes in the time a human trimester takes to get started.
Which trimester can a vet confirm the pregnancy?
The second. The relaxin blood test works from about day 21–28, ultrasound shows heartbeats from day 25, and palpation fits days 28–35 — all in trimester 2. Trimester 1 ends just as the first test becomes possible.
When do puppies grow the most?
Trimester 3 — weeks 7 to 9 especially. The skeletons calcify, the X-ray count becomes possible from day 45, and the fetuses gain most of their birth weight. It is also when the mother's appetite, size and nesting behavior change the fastest.
