Signs of Dog Pregnancy, Stage by Stage
Dog pregnancy signs arrive in stages — and the earliest ones are easy to miss or mistake. Here is what shows up in each third of the 63 days, what it means, and the one thing signs can never do: prove it. For proof you need the confirmation methods — this page ends with those.

Early signs (weeks 1–4)
A few off days around week 3. As implantation completes, some dogs go off their food for a few days or vomit once or twice — the closest thing dogs have to morning sickness. More sleep. She tires faster and chooses rest over play. Behavior shifts, either way: some females become noticeably more affectionate and clingy; others get a little irritable and want space. Pinking up (toward week 4): nipples become slightly larger and pinker than their normal color. On blood work, a vet may also see mild anemia and a raised white blood cell count.
Mid-pregnancy signs (weeks 5–6)
Weight gain and a rounding belly. From week 5 the fetuses grow fast enough to show; by week 6 she is visibly pregnant. Appetite returns — and then some. The week-3 dip is replaced by real hunger as the litter's demands climb. Nipples larger and darker, with the hair around them thinning. A little clear discharge can be normal; colored, cloudy or smelly discharge is not — that one is a vet call.
Late signs (weeks 7–9)
An unmistakable belly, and from about week 8, puppies you can see or feel moving — often when she lies on her side after a meal. Mammary glands swell, and milk can be present in the final days. Nesting begins: digging at bedding, rearranging blankets, carrying toys to a chosen corner. In the last 24–48 hours: restlessness, panting and a clear drop in appetite — the opening notes of the labor signs.
Signs are not proof
Every sign on this page can also be produced by a false pregnancy — the hormone pattern after a heat is nearly identical. The four ways to actually know are a relaxin blood test (day 21–28), an ultrasound (from day 25), palpation (days 28–35) and an X-ray (from day 45), compared in how to tell if your dog is pregnant.
Watching for signs is easier with dates attached: the dog pregnancy calculator turns her mating date into her current week, so you know which stage's signs to expect — and the canine pregnancy calendar puts each one on a real calendar date.
Frequently asked questions
What is the very first sign of dog pregnancy?
Usually there is not one — weeks 1–2 are silent. The first things owners actually notice come around week 3: a few off-food or mildly sick days, more sleeping, and behavior that is a little more clingy or a little more irritable than usual. Nipples pinkening up follows toward week 4.
Can a dog show pregnancy signs and not be pregnant?
Yes — that is a false pregnancy, and it can reproduce almost every sign on this page, including nesting and milk. Hormones after a heat follow the same pattern whether she was mated or not. Only a vet's relaxin test or ultrasound settles it.
When do signs become reliable?
Signs never become proof, but by weeks 6–7 the picture is hard to argue with: an obvious round belly, strong appetite, developed mammary glands and, soon after, puppies you can feel moving. Even then, confirmation and a puppy count need the vet visits in our how-to-tell guide. Once she is confirmed pregnant, our pregnant dog care guide covers the feeding and care routine week by week.
