How Long Are Dogs Pregnant?
About 63 days — roughly nine weeks, or two months. That is the whole answer, and everything below is the explanation of why the number you count from your mating date runs from 58 to 68 days instead, and why your dog's breed has nothing to do with it.

The 63-day answer
Measured the way veterinarians measure it — from ovulation — a dog's pregnancy lasts about 63 days (references put the average at 62–64). It is one of the steadiest numbers in breeding: the embryos implant, develop and reach full term on a schedule that barely varies between individuals, and not at all between breeds.
Why owners count 58–68 days
You almost certainly do not know the ovulation day — you know the mating day. Between those two events, biology inserts a delay: sperm can survive inside the female for several days waiting, and her eggs need about two days after ovulation to mature before fertilization is possible. So a mating on Monday might become a pregnancy on Thursday, and that pregnancy still lasts exactly 63 days — from Thursday. Counted from Monday, the birth lands on day 66. That spread, and nothing else, is the 58–68 day window every honest calculator shows you.
In months, for the humans asking
The PAA favorite: about two months. Nine weeks is 2.07 months; the full mating-to-whelping span (58–68 days) is about 1.9–2.2 months. There is no trimester-sized planning horizon here the way there is with a human pregnancy — a dog goes from mating to puppies faster than a season changes, which is why the preparation timeline feels rushed if you start at week 5.
Why breed size does not change it
A Chihuahua and a Great Dane ovulate, implant and gestate on the same 63-day schedule. What size changes is the litter — about 1–4 puppies in small dogs, 5–6 in a typical first litter, 8–12 in large ones — plus feeding amounts and how closely whelping should be supervised. Any calculator that asks for a breed and then moves the due date is selling decoration. Our by-breed guide covers what breed genuinely changes.
The number to plan around
Use three dates, not one: ready by day 58, due day 63, vet call at day 68. The dog gestation calculator gives you all three from your breeding date, in gestation and trimester language.
Short version to keep: 63 days from ovulation, 58–68 from mating, about 2 months, every breed. Put your own dates on it with the dog pregnancy calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a dog pregnant in months?
About two months. The whole pregnancy — 63 days from ovulation — runs just over nine weeks, which is roughly 2 to 2.3 months. Owners counting from the mating date should expect the birth somewhere in the third month after the mating month begins, in weeks 9–10.
Are dogs pregnant for exactly 9 weeks?
Not exactly. Nine weeks is the average from ovulation, and it is a consistent average — but fertilization can happen days after the mating you saw, so real pregnancies end from day 58 to day 68 when counted from mating. “About 9 weeks, give or take a few days” is the honest version.
How do I calculate my dog's pregnancy?
Add 63 days to the first mating date for the estimated due date; days 58 and 68 from the same date give the window. Count forward from the mating date to today for how far along she is. The calculator on our homepage does all three counts and turns them into a dated chart.
