Small Dog Pregnancy: Calculator & Care Guide
The small dog pregnancy calculator is the standard one — deliberately. Small dogs are pregnant for the same 63 days as every other dog. What changes is everything around the dates: tiny litters, singletons, feeding reserves and how closely whelping needs watching.
Everything is calculated in your browser. The dates you enter are never sent anywhere — no signup, no account, nothing stored.
The same 63 days
It is the most common small-dog myth there is: surely a tiny dog has a shorter pregnancy? She does not. Gestation from ovulation is about 63 days in a Chihuahua just as in a Great Dane, and the 58–68 day window from the first mating applies unchanged. Any “small dog” calculator that shortens the pregnancy is inventing numbers. Our dog pregnancy by breed guide shows what size does and does not change, side by side.

What is different with small dogs
Small litters — often 1–4 puppies. Fewer puppies share the same uterus, and a single puppy grows noticeably larger than one of six would. A large singleton in a small mother is the classic small-dog whelping problem, and it is the reason the day-45 X-ray count matters even more here: you need to know whether she is carrying one big puppy or three ordinary ones.
Less body reserve. A toy mother has small energy stores and a small stomach. From week 5, feed a high-quality puppy food in small, frequent meals, keep her weight climbing steadily, and weigh her weekly — a small dog losing condition in late pregnancy has very little slack.
Closer whelping supervision. Small mothers tire faster and their puppies chill faster. Plan to be present for the whole whelping, keep the room warm, and have your vet's number — and the emergency clinic's — agreed in advance, including what a C-section would involve if the vet advises one.
Week by week, in brief, for small breeds
The development timeline is the breed-neutral one in the week-by-week guide: confirmation by ultrasound from day 25, the X-ray count from day 45, temperature checks from day 56, whelping window days 58–68. For a small dog, underline two entries: the X-ray (singleton check) and day 56 onward (she should not be left alone for long stretches once the window opens).
Preparation notes for a small litter
- A smaller whelping box she cannot feel lost in — she should be able to stretch out, and puppies must not be able to wander and chill.
- A gram-accurate kitchen scale for puppy weights — toy-breed puppies may weigh 80–150 g, and daily weights are your earliest health warning.
- Puppy milk replacer and a small bottle or syringe, in case a puppy needs help in the first days.
- Gentle, reliable warmth: a heating pad on low under half the box, so puppies can crawl away from the heat as well as toward it.
And the standing advice for every size, doubled for small ones: the dates above are estimates for planning. Confirm the pregnancy with your vet, and keep them in the loop through whelping.
Small mothers run on small reserves — our guide to what to feed a pregnant dog covers the little-and-often feeding pattern, and the calcium rule, that suit them best.
Small breeds also reach their first heat earliest — sometimes at six months — which is why a first-heat pregnancy is so often a small-dog story, and why it needs a vet involved from the start.
Frequently asked questions
Is the calculator different for small dogs?
No — the math is identical, because gestation is about 63 days from ovulation for a 2 kg toy breed and a giant breed alike. This page keeps the standard calculator at the top and adds what genuinely differs for small dogs underneath: litter size, feeding reserves and whelping supervision.
How many puppies do small dogs have?
Often just 1–4, and a single puppy — a singleton — is common in toy breeds. A singleton matters: it grows larger than a puppy sharing the uterus, so get the day-45 X-ray count and agree a whelping plan with your vet rather than assuming a natural delivery.
Do small dogs whelp earlier?
No. The day 58–68 window from the first mating applies to small dogs exactly as it does to large ones. Puppies arriving well before day 58 are premature at any breed size and need a vet immediately.
